90 years old woman raped by a 33 year old man in Delhi proves woman aren’t safe in India

The Indian capital has witnessed another horrible incident. On Monday, Sept 7, a 33-year-old man raped a 90-year-old woman. The incident took place in the Chawla area of Nazafgarh in Delhi. The police have registered a case under several sections and have arrested the accused. The accused, who has been identified as a 33-year-old named Sonu is a resident of the Rewla Khanpur Area of Delhi.

According to a statement issued by the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), the incident happened at 5 pm on Sept 7. While the woman was waiting for her milkman in the evening near her house, the accused came on a two-wheeler and told her that “her regular milk delivery man wasn’t available today and he will take her to the place where she could get milk. He took the lady to a farm instead and raped her.”

It is also being said that when the woman tried to defend herself, the accused also assaulted her. According to the victim woman, he told the accused that she was his grandmother's age, but he did not listen to her. Hearing the screams of the woman, some villagers rushed to the spot for help and nabbed the accused. After this, the police were informed. The police confirmed that the accused was intoxicated when he committed the offence.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Santosh Kumar Meena said in a statement, "A case under section 376 of Indian Penal Code was registered and the accused was arrested."

The woman was bleeding and was in extreme pain and trauma. The locals called her son and the police later took her for medical examination, the DCW said. The lady has been discharged from the hospital after the medical examination. She seems to be stable now. The woman’s medical examination report recorded injuries to her body and secret organs.

DCW chief Swati Maliwal met the survivor and shared her devastation through a Twitter statement saying,” From a six-month-old girl to a 90-year-old woman, no one is safe in Delhi. The kind of trauma this woman had to face indicates that the perpetrators of these crimes are not humans.” “I met the woman today, she is an extremely courageous woman. We will ensure she gets justice. This case needs to be fast-tracked and justice should be served within six months,” she added.
